This line features reds and grays with lots of whimsical holiday images. We especially love how she used the panel to make small quilts. Clever!

Family:
I have been married for 36 years. We have traveled extensively during that time and have now settled down here in Atlanta, TX. We have five sons, four of which are serving in the Military, two went to Iraq, one is in Japan as of now. We have two married sons with one couple living just fifteen minutes away and expecting our first grandchild.
How long have you been quilting:
When our youngest son turned 12, I felt the need to redefine myself and I did that by throwing myself into quilting.
What's your favorite technique?
I have to say that I love, love ... triple love applique.
Who taught you how to quilt? My mother was a quilter but I was never interested until I wanted a quilt of my own and saw the prices so I designed my first real quilt using cardboard, a pencil, and ruler. The answer is self taught with a ton of mistakes a long the way.
Do you belong to any guilds?
I do not belong to a guild at this time.

I love to make scrappy quilts but the occasional 2 or 3 fabric quilt is nice for a quicky.
Today, designer and illustrator, Jan Shade Beach is visiting the blog with some holiday stories. She is the talented designer behind the very successful "Holiday Frost" collection. She followed up with the "Holiday Cheer" and "Winter Frost" collections. Now, she has designed the "Holiday Magic" range which will be available next year.
HG: Hi Jan. Thanks for spending a few moments with us during this busy time. We wanted to see what you've been up to and to find out about some of your holiday traditions.
JSB: Thanks! I just finished the follow-up line to "Holiday Frost" and "Holiday Cheer”. It’s called “Holiday Magic” and will debut next year.
HG: What is the best part about the holidays for you?
JSB: My favorite part about the holidays is having the whole family here. We have so much fun together. Several years ago we wanted to come up with a game that people of all ages could play together after Christmas dinner. We decided on “Bingo”. I had all kinds of prizes ranging from lottery tickets, fun Christmas hats, gift cards, to a rubber chicken. It was such a hit that it’s become a tradition. The winner of the rubber chicken has to get their picture taken with it, sign it and then give it back to be used again next year. (See a few pics of past winners)
My mom was the first to win the rubber chicken.
My Dad won it a couple of years later.
My daughter Shannon was also a winner.
Another holiday tradition is that I hand-paint a nutcracker for my son Kyle every year.
One of my absolute favorites of the holiday season is Christmas cookies! I love to bake them and I love to eat them!
HG: We think that we know this answer but ... what are your favorite holiday colors?
JSB: My favorite holiday colors are red and white. I like the clean crisp contrast of the two colors. I like the trending red, charcoal and ivory color combination right now.
HG: Are you going to make anything this year for gifts? Have you started yet?
JSB: I am also a photographer and well versed on PhotoShop, so I have plans to make everyone special gifts involving photos. Have I started yet? Of course not! lol [HG: In Jan's defense, this interview happened a short while ago. We are sure that she has started].
HG: Are you an early or late shopper?
JSB: I shop all year during my travels and put things away for Christmas. I’m always surprised at what I have collected when it comes time to wrap the gifts.
HG: Do you have any fun news that you'd like to share?
JSB: I was asked to speak at various Quild Guilds in Tennessee and Alabama this year. It was wonderful getting to meet so many talented and creative quilters.
I am proud to say that I have been introduced to the women that head up two worth charities for the state of Alabama: "The Linus Project" (blankets/quilts for sick children) and “Quilts of Valor” (for veterans and wounded warriors). I have donated 100 yards of fabric to both charities this year and hope to be more involved this coming year.

The Henry Glass crew always loves this part of the month. We wait in anticipation for the challenger's design and post. We are never disappointed! If you want to submit to us, send us one photograph that best represents your style. We select a new challenger for each month. Your skill level can be at any level. Tell us a little about your family.
I live with my husband of 28 years, Harvey. We have 2 kids: Kyle is a junior in college, and Katie is finishing her senior year in high school. We also have 3 cats and a rescue dog.
How long have you been quilting?
Over 25 years
What's your favorite technique?
I love piecing, and I’m always trying new (to me) techniques. Right now, my new favorites are curved piecing and EPP.
Who taught you how to quilt?
My grandmother was a quilter. She didn’t teach me, but I have a lot of her quilts and I cherish them all. I’m a self taught sewer and quilter. I learned a lot from Alex Anderson on TV!
Do you belong to any guilds?
I’m the founder and first president of the Baltimore Modern Quilt Guild. [hg: Their blog is a fun read!] I love my guild ~ so many fun people with great ideas and always willing to share.
Anything else you would like to share with our readers?
I love to quilt and would do it 24/7 if I could. I consider myself foremost a teacher and love speaking to different groups and sharing the modern aesthetic. I teach modern quilting classes in the Mid-Atlantic region and upstate New York. I’ve also written many tutorials for my own blog, and other popular quilting blogs such as Sew Mama, Sew! I got to attend my first quit market in the fall of 2013 to promote my new book Classic Modern Quilts.

Today, Jill Finley is our guest and she is going to have some fun answers to the party questions. Make sure that you go over to her blog too. She is giving an extra bundle of fabric away there. We are going to show off her pdq* Club [PRETTY DARN QUICK] project for "November" too. It is the perfect gift to make because it is so festive and an easy project. Here is the link to all of her other projects in the series. We know that you'll find something great to make as a last minute gift or two.
1. As a kid I always loved getting snow things—like sleds or new skis and boots. We had a lot of family fun on the ski slopes. And the sledding was monumental—we lived on a hill and the road was long and steep. Sometimes in the winter when we got a great snow storm, we would just not plow the road, so it was perfect for sledding. (Only problem was that cars couldn’t drive up.) Dad would get out the snowmobiles and shuttle the sledders from the bottom back up to our driveway.

2. I am definitely a late shopper! One year I actually tried starting early—several problems arose: I forgot what I had purchased and where I had stashed it, and I just kept shopping, the more time there was, the more I spent! So now I just do my shopping a few days before Christmas. Our wedding anniversary is on the 17th and we usually would go out—and do our shopping!

3. Hot chocolate! If you are spending all that time outside sledding and building snow forts, you have to have hot cocoa! No alcohol here—we have plenty of fun without it! Now if you want really great hot cocoa, this is what you do:
Heat together on the stove in a large pot:
4 cups milk
4 cups half and half
1 cup cream
Stir it contanstly so it doesn’t burn. When it is steaming, and almost to a boil, add in a large package of chocolate chips. Stir until they melt. (You may want to add a few more or less, depending on your taste.)
Add a dash or two of salt, and 2 teaspoons of vanilla. Stir and enjoy! (you can add flavorings like orange extract or peppermint or cinnamon, etc) YUMMM.
4. It depends what the present is, and who it is from. Sometimes it is just not worth the effort and pain to return it! We often make homemade gifts, and they are really not returnable! (Not that you would want to!!)

5. Well. . . .if you were to ask my mom, I am quite sure she would say I was often on the naughty list. I know this because she would frequently remind me and others who might be listening how “difficult” I was. I think she was always a little amazed that I turned out to be a “normal” adult. At Mom’s 90th birthday party, she said a few glowing comments about each of my siblings, and when it was time to tell about me, she told the story of when I was so naughty that I stood in the corner ALL DAY rather than say I was sorry. I was only 6.
I wasn’t really that bad, just, as they say, a willful child. I think I have done a few good things since then. Let’s hope so! Mom is gone now, and every day I am grateful to her for all she taught me—even though I was “difficult.”
