Industry News- Upcycle Your Fabric this Holiday Season

This week's "Industry News" highlights Rina Albala and her three girls. They are letting their creativity shine through this holiday season by wrapping their gifts with both recycled fabric and other material that Rina had purchased for sewing, but never used.

Shari Okeke/CBC
Inspired by her mother who sewed Halloween costumes and even wrote sewing books when she was a child, Rina wants to foster the same love for fabric in her little girls.

The Albala family is using a Japanese wrapping technique to wrap all of their Christmas presents in fabric this year. This technique involves knots which makes it easy and safe for her young girls to do. PLUS the material is reusable for next year. We applaud the Albala family for upcycling their fabric and using it to wrap gifts this holiday season creatively!

Sounds like a #SewRevolution type of family! Don’t you think?

What are your thoughts about using upcycled fabric to wrap presents? Have you tried this technique before or would you like to? Sound off in the comment section below.

I try to wrap a gift for a quilter in fabric so she can use it future projects, it's like getting a second gift.

I've used cloth bags for presents for 30 years. It is fun to look back on some of those "old fabrics" and the memories from gifts they enclosed. It's fun to add bags with new fabrics.

This year I sewed origami bags to hold the Pandora charms I gave as gifts. The fabrics were too fun and happy to not make into something!

I wrap my girlfriend's gifts in fabric. I also make pillowcases for my granddaughters, & other children, to use as gift bags.

It's fun to make gift bags or wrap gifts in fabrics. Sometime fabrics are an indication of what is inside... sometimes it's something different. Flour sack dish towels make fun wrapping as well.

I like to use little bits of material to make doll dresses or doll quilts. They make a nice holiday or birthday gift, even I'm sorry you had your tonsils out gift for a little girl. For boys make the edge of their pillowcases one of a kind with bits of fabric you piece together to make little plane or truck designs.
F6977P-88 I love this panel. I love Snowmen/or Snowwomen themes in winter and for December Holidays and Christmas which our family celebrates.

I haven’t tried it. I am WAY too fond of my fabric, even scraps! However, I might do it for a quilting friend who will cherish the fabric ss much as I do.
