Applique The Kim Diehl Way

Snowball Blossoms by Kim Diehl

Kim Diehl signature style includes scrappy patchwork, beautiful applique and a stunning palette of prints that she designs for Henry Glass. Her keen color sense is showcased in her latest collection, Gathering Basket. The collection is full of pretty prints painted with Kim's flair for color ranging from luscious greens to fresh purples, reds and yellows.

For the release of this collection, Kim has designed a special project, Snowball Basket. This lovely quilt features a simple but gorgeous applique center surrounded by easy patchwork. You can download it for free here.

Kim teaches her special applique worldwide and freezer paper plays a big part of the process. Do you use freezer paper when you applique but find that the paper you buy in the grocery store curls or doesn't tear off the rolls smoothly? Kim teamed up with Martingale & Co. to bring you Kim Diehl's Best Applique Freezer Paper - convenient 8 1/2" x 11" sheets of freezer paper that you can draw on or even print on your inkjet printer.

With the 30-sheet set, you can download the pattern for this sweet quilt, Folk-Art Dish Garden for free following the directions located in the package of freezer paper.

Folk-Art Dish Garden by Kim Diehl

We are excited to bring you a giveaway for a fat-quarter bundle of Gathering Basket and a package of Kim Diehl's Best Applique Freezer Paper. Make sure that you hop over to Martingale's blog for the their giveaway of the same prizes and for some more inspiration from Kim! Double the fun.

Just comment below to tell us what you love about applique.

I think that applique enhances a quilt. I love seeing an appliqued border on a pieced quilt. Adds a special spark!

I am relatively new to applique, but have completed several small projects & it would be wonderful to win the bundle by Kim & the freezer papers. That would be a great help with new applique projects. Thanks for the possibility to win!

The thing I love about appliqué is that anything is possible - no shape gets left behind. I've always loved Kim's style and I have many of her books. Thanks for the opportunity to win some of her fabrics. Cheers

I love applique although it scares me. And what is not to like about Kim Diehl. I love her patters and her fabrics. Thank you for the free pattern and the chance to win!

I love the extra bit of dimension and the lovely stitching on the edge. (I always blanket stitch my applique)

I love the interest it adds to quilts

I don't do much applique, but I love that you can do shapes that are impossible in patchwork or foundation piecing. That fabric, by the way, is beautiful. Your freezer paper is a great idea.

I only really applique with felt as there's no raw edge/fraying to worry about. I have done needle turn applique and lost the will to live. I would love to find out more about the freezer paper technique as I do like the end result of applique.

I made Prairie Star Posies out of Kim Diehl and Laurie Baker’s book Homestyle Quilts. I used heat and bond technique rather than freezer paper. I would love to try freezer paper technique with that adorable pattern!! Love all of Kim’s patterns!!!

What's not to love about applique, it makes every quilt shine, whether just a little or a lot. Kim has a nice touch with her projects. Can't wait to try out her freezer paper sheets.

Adding applique to a nicely pieced quilt turns it into an awesome quilt. It might look fine without the applique, but with the applique the quilt is taken to a whole new level. Applique is also a good way to cover up not-so-precisely pieced sections, assuming you're clever enough to come up with a design that will work without being obvious that it's being used to disguise a mistake.

I love appliqué. It is what I turn to when life is hectic and I need to relax. It keeps the blood pressure down. Kim's new freezer paper sheets sounds like what I need as I travel a lot and appliqué always goes with me.

I am fairly new to applique, but so far my fave has been reverse applique. It amazes me as I cut the layers out and the design appears. And I love playing with all the decorative stitches that give each project it's own unique look.
