Applique The Kim Diehl Way

Snowball Blossoms by Kim Diehl

Kim Diehl signature style includes scrappy patchwork, beautiful applique and a stunning palette of prints that she designs for Henry Glass. Her keen color sense is showcased in her latest collection, Gathering Basket. The collection is full of pretty prints painted with Kim's flair for color ranging from luscious greens to fresh purples, reds and yellows.

For the release of this collection, Kim has designed a special project, Snowball Basket. This lovely quilt features a simple but gorgeous applique center surrounded by easy patchwork. You can download it for free here.

Kim teaches her special applique worldwide and freezer paper plays a big part of the process. Do you use freezer paper when you applique but find that the paper you buy in the grocery store curls or doesn't tear off the rolls smoothly? Kim teamed up with Martingale & Co. to bring you Kim Diehl's Best Applique Freezer Paper - convenient 8 1/2" x 11" sheets of freezer paper that you can draw on or even print on your inkjet printer.

With the 30-sheet set, you can download the pattern for this sweet quilt, Folk-Art Dish Garden for free following the directions located in the package of freezer paper.

Folk-Art Dish Garden by Kim Diehl

  4. I don't usually work with applique. When I do, I find that it is fun to fussy cut the pieces. It's easy to do raw edge applique and it doesn't take a lot of time to finish a project.

I've done a quilt with circles that I appliqued. And I've appliqued spray of flowers on two corners of two quilts. Sometimes a quilt needs just a little something to really make it POP. Thank you for the opportunity to win a super great giveaway.

  79. I love applique for several reasons: it's portable - so easy to keep a baggie of supplies and scraps of fabric at the ready for Drs. visits and such. With Kim's applique papers, it's even easier to travel with my applique kit! It's an easy type of work for short bits of time - easy to pick up and put down. I love applique for the evenings in front of the TV with hubby or when I am just too tired to sit at a sewing machine.
With applique, I am able to stay busy no matter where I am or what I'm doing. Plus, it really gives a quilt the 'soft' touch...a great artistic finish to a pieced quilt. But most of all, applique allows me to 'design' my own fabric. Not a bad set of reasons I am in love with Applique! Hugs, Deb
