HG: Where do you get your inspiration from?
Shelly: I get inspiration from so many different places, but I believe my strongest is from my love of animals and kids. Each filled with their own personalities and expression. This I try to bring to each character. Another is a particular mood can inspire me.. whether it be the feeling I get from a warm sunny day, a chilly snowy night, or even the feeling or memory of favorite holidays! Inspiration is everywhere!

HG: How long have you been designing?
Shelly: Hard to believe but I started designing back in 1997. I authored a few craft books on working in Polymer clay, one of which was with Disney and sculpting their characters. What a thrill that was! During this time, I had always felt the pull to follow my true love which is illustrating. I felt the most freedom when I had a pencil in my hand. In 2007 I made the decision to concentrate solely on illustrating and haven’t look back since.

HG: Can you give us a sneak peek into your studio (or where you work) just a pic or two.
Shelly: (See pic above)

HG: Where did you grow up and where is your home town now?
Shelly: I grew up on the southwest side of Chicago. LOVED it! I had the best neighborhood and friends! To this day I am still close and in contact with friends I had in kindergarten as well as my first crush when I was 11, and who later became my husband Mike! I now live in New Lenox, Illinois which is only about 30 minutes south of the city. My mom still lives in the house I grew up in, so going back and visiting her is always home.

HG: Pets or children??? Or both??
Shelly: Well I have two of the greatest kids.. My daughter Casey who is now 22, and my son Mickey who is 18. Boy where does the time go? We are a very close family and for that I am blessed. As my kids started to get older and more independent, I found myself with a few more pets! My three dogs and one sweet cat. The dogs range in size from a 5lb Chihuahua to a 150 lb Newfoundland. Yep quite the crowd. They are my companions, co-workers, and as I said earlier.. lots of inspiration.

HG: Favorite hobbies or vacation spot??
Shelly: Hmmm.. well since my hobby and passion has turned into my business, I would have to say my job! I just love a quiet afternoon, comfy on the couch with pencil and pad! Sketching and sketching! I do also enjoy horseback riding. I would love to make more time for that!

HG: What Medium do you create with??
Shelly: I always start with pencil and paper sketching away. And depending on my mood or vision, I sometimes will start the colorizing process with basic water color painting or illustrator markers and then a bit of colored pencil. I will then scan it into the computer where I will start digitally painting even more and bring in lots of detail. Other days I may just scan in my sketches and do all of the painting digitally right on the computer. Because I license my designs for various products, it is always a good thing to have the artwork ready for the manufacturers in a digital format.

After about 7 or 8 months of not having any new products to show you, I finally have something new to share! I have gotten the go-ahead to spill the beans on a new fabric line that will be coming out later this year. I painted the line up last summer, so it seems like I have been waiting a while to show you! My inspiration began with all the images of cute cottages I had been seeing on blogs like House of Turquoise. (one of the best decorating blogs, in my opinion.) I loved the cottages with weathered grey siding and a turquoise front door. Isn’t it a great combo?

These Post Card prints are from her new fabric line for HG: Best Wishes.

I thought I would share a little about some of the prints in my fabric line. I love interesting backgrounds for my applique and I also love words on fabric. These postcard prints are some of my favorite! I can't wait until I have them to actually sew with. I think they will make fantastic background fabrics. They are available in blue script and red script.

The inspiration for the fabric line was a set of old vintage postcards, thus the name "Best Wishes". This piece was the starting point. I am hoping that all of you will love them as much as I do. Happy Quilting!

New Hampton Farm Fabric by Little Quilts

The Hampton Farm line of fabric arrived at Little Quilts a few weeks ago. It was even more beautiful than they remembered when designing it. They love the classic reproduction look that combine the larger floral with coordinating smaller prints. The mini stripe is so versatile too. The customers at Little Quilts love the small stripe for sashings and bindings. These patterns are available to download. Sylvia loves traditional designs so she made this Triangle Quilt. Alice loves House blocks and the fabrics leant themselves perfectly to make a house pillow to go with the Hampton Farm House quilt. The Ten Minute Table runner is one of the most popular patterns in the shop. They make perfect hostess and teacher gifts. Homespun towels are fast and easy to make with fabric trim and jumbo ric rac. 'My Favourite Things Sewing Basket & Accessories'. The basket has pockets and is stiffened in the top edge with rigilene (boning) to retain its shape. The pattern also includes an easy-to-make needle case, scissor keep & scissor decoration, and a pincushion, all of which can be hooked over the basket buttons for easy-to-find storage.

I thought a doorstop would be a perfect accessory in a girls bedroom and was quite easy to put together with just a small amount of applique. Again I just HAD to fussy cut the flower fabric - FUN! This pattern is called 'Welcome Home Doorstop'.

I made 'Laura's Quilt' to represent the whimsical life of girls (finished size 45 3/4"x53 1/2"). I again fussy-cut the image print and made them into ovals and finished off the quilt with a cute scallop around the edge. This pattern also includes 3 stitcheries if you would like to use these as an alternative to the image fabric.

The image fabric is perfect for fussy-cut hexagons, so I just HAD to make this 'Tea Party Table runner'. There are very detailed instructions to make both the table runner and the coasters and also included in the pattern are some stitchery designs for the hexagon centres if you prefer.

Little Quilts also has a kit for a sweet baby quilt using Woodland Friends designed by Debi Hron. The center is the panel with the charming owls, and other critters. We cut simple squares and joined them together for the side borders. The top and bottom borders are just strips of the stripe fabric. So quick and easy! HG Designer Kim Diehl blogs for US!

A warm and sunny hello to you!

While many of us are living under a blanket of snow and hibernating in our sewing rooms, what better way to console ourselves than with a rainbow of beautiful fabrics that remind us of spring? My “Winsome” collection has arrived (yay!), and I’ve wasted no time at all in ripping open the box, grabbing my rotary cutter, and diving into these colorful prints.
I really enjoy designing the project for each new fabric collection, and this Winsome lap quilt was especially fun because it just feels…happy. And if I can’t be outdoors in my real garden, the next best thing is piecing and appliquéing my very own indoor garden – beautiful sky blues, rosy pinks, apple greens, and sparkling reds…this wonderful palette makes me feel like spring has already sprung.

And of all the quilts I make, my very favorite designs are those that feature scraps. With this in mind, my goal for each of my collections is to achieve finished fabrics that will blend well with my existing stash of quilting prints. So of course the first thing I did was take these perfectly good fabrics, cut them up into bits and pieces, and then sew them all back together again with the other prints I have on hand – and I couldn’t be happier with the results…success! What a perfect blend of “old and new” because the designs are rooted in tradition, but the colors given them a fresh and modern feel.

I hope that you enjoy these Winsome prints as well, and that they inspire you to cut up some perfectly good fabric of your own and create something that makes your heart happy.

HG Designer Jill Finley Blogs for US!

Hi! I’m Jill Finley of Jillily Studio, and I am glad to be here to blog for my favorite fabric company—Henry Glass! I thought for sure that I had posted here before, but I guess not, so it is about time!
My third line, “Elizabeth’s Letters” just arrived at my door a few weeks ago, so maybe you are enjoying it now too. I have seen it in several quilt shops, and I know that it is going fast, so I hope you can find it at a shop near you.
Let me tell you about this fabric….
I used a handwritten letter from my great-grandmother as a design element for this line. The letter was written in 1898 by Elizabeth, to her daughter, Margaritha. It was a farewell letter as she sent her daughters off to America, leaving behind their family and beloved homeland of Switzerland.
My grandmother was only 18 years old when she left home with two younger sisters. They did not know when they left if they would ever see their parents again.
The letter is penned in German script, but I do have an interpretation of part of it….

“Memory and farewell words from your never forgetting mother. My dear child, take these few lines with you as you travel. . . Be an example to your brothers and sisters, as the oldest daughter. . . That's a really clever title, isn't it? I always struggle with naming things
and blog titles are no exception. Oh well, not my gift!

Getting to the point, I had a fun package arrive from overseas. This was inside...My sample yardage of Artful Home has arrived!

That means the line has been printed and has been stashed on a boat to make its journey to the US. Before it is trapped on that boat for 2 months, 5 yards are sent ahead to me, so I can start making some projects. That way they are ready when the yardage arrives in Quilt Shops.

I cant wait to get started planning and cutting.

In fact, I am so anxious to get to work that I am going to forgo talking, (or in this case, typing) and just show a few pictures.

Next time I talk to you this stack may look different! Hopefully it will look more like a quilt or two. Or maybe Three or Four...

Little Quilts Blogs for HG!

A customer of Little Quilts wanted to get rid of her stash (YES! We took her temperature!). So, Little Quilts sold it for $5 a lb (about $1 a yd). This customer even had quilt tops she made but did not really like. We finished and sold them, as well. The efforts raised $450. The quilts will be auctioned in March.

Hello… wait. What am I supposed to call you? The Hip Hop Henrys? The Henry Hotties?

Hey, I like that one!

So let me introduce myself. My name is Carrie and I’m one of the new girls in the Henry Glass neighborhood. I work for the Divine Miss R. Now that Rosie has her name on the selvage of some fabric, she’s decided that she deserves a more appropriate title.

Speaking of titles, I’m an informal kind of girl so please call me “Carrie”. And just so you know, I won’t hold it against you if you call me “Rosie”. Everybody does.

The folks at Chez Glass have asked me to come by and introduce Fresh Palette, the first fabric collection from Miss Rosie’s Quilt Co. and Henry Glass. The finished fabric has finally arrived and oh my, it sure is pretty.

I have to confess that I don’t know which part of the fabric arriving on my doorstep was the most exciting. Seeing the finished fabric or just getting the box itself! It isn’t every day that I get a big box from South Korea ~ even the FedEx man thought it was exciting. Then again, maybe he was just humoring me… that kind of thing happens a lot around here.

But I’m here to talk about Fresh Palette, right? It came about from a piece of vintage fabric, a very large scale floral print in tan, rose and a creamy beige sort of shade. Well, that’s how the print on the fabric got started. This all started with an idea for the kind of quilt I felt like making, a quilt that I couldn’t find the fabric for. Don’t get me wrong, I could find all sorts of beautiful fabric but nothing that was “just right” for my imaginary quilt. I felt a little like Goldilocks.
So I did a little bit of “reverse engineering” and tried to picture what the fabric in my imaginary quilt would look like. The color came first, then the prints. And that’s how Fresh Palette came about. I didn’t have a specific quilt design in mind but I wanted something simple. This went to the quilter this morning.

As for the name, that was the hardest part! I wish I had a story for it but it comes down to this – these are the words I kept using to describe the color scheme and the “feel” I wanted the fabric to have. But I’m getting better at this naming thing, the next collection is going to be called “Nine Dots”. It has a story. And you’ll have to wait a little while to hear it.

Time to include my excitement about "Posies and Puppies"! The fabric line is in and will soon be in the stores. Here I am, on a very hot July 1 here in Minnesota, plotting and planning how to use the fabric. I know all of you will enjoy the line just as much. I will have a small quilt ready soon, and I will have a picture to share next time.

I am almost finished with a quilt I long hoped to make, using the chain-link block from the newspapers' Nancy Page column in the 1930s and the prairie points needed for the edge on a large queen size quilt. I did use my three lines of 1930s reproduction fabrics. Yes, I will have a picture to show all readers as soon as I get the knife edge finish stitched on the back of the quilt.

I hope all of you interested in our Henry Glass & Co. fabrics are also looking for quilt patterns for these fabrics. Nothing can replace the visual of a quilt made from the fabrics we all love.
I am currently on a summer break of sorts. My lecture schedule picks up again in August, when I begin my visits to groups throughout the upper Midwest. Meanwhile, I am designing patterns and piecing quilts as quickly as I can. For all of you, enjoy my "Posies and Puppies"

We are so excited about our new “Summertime” fabric collection for Henry Glass & Co. The idea behind the collection is that summer is a busy time for everyone, what with soccer, baseball, gymnastics, vacations, etc. I wanted to design a collection that included prints that were large enough to stand on their own with no appliqué and still make an interesting quilt. That way, if you are on the go all the time, you can still make a simple pieced quilt that is interesting to look at with a contemporary feel.

We included a little black and gray in our palette this time and love the result! We have lots of ideas and projects planned for this fun line. One of them is a month to month appliqué sampler.

If you start the quilt when the fabric arrives, you will finish it just in time for summer!

HG Designer Kim Diehl Blogs for us this Summer!

A big summer “hello” to everyone! This is the time of year when I usually want to be out in my garden more than I want to be inside sewing, but since receiving my Along the Fence fabrics, I’ve had to dig deep for enough will power to wander outside and water my poor flowers!

My college-age daughter, Katie, came home for a visit recently and she couldn’t wait to dive into the pile of prints when she saw them. Before I knew it, we were hip-deep in craft projects! In addition to re-covering some of her bulletin boards, we made her a simple but WAY cute earring hanger for her wall.
Here’s how we did this: First, we purchased a frame and removed the glass and all the parts and pieces. Next, we used the backing to cut a piece of foam core board to size, and then cut a piece of quilt batting and green print 5337-66 to be about 3-4” larger than the foam core board. We wrapped the layered green print and batting over the sides of the foam core board snugly, anchoring them in place to the back of the board using a hot glue gun along the edges. We knotted lengths of 1 1/2”-wide purple ribbon and positioned them over the front of the fabric, again anchoring them to the back of the board with hot glue. To keep the lengths of ribbon sturdy, we wiggled straight pins into the ribbon knots to hide them, angling the pin points between the layers of the foam core board. Last, we re-assembled the frame with the covered board and backing, and added earrings.

I hope this will inspire you to whip up some fun little projects (and maybe even some quilts) of your own!

Shown here is the Little Quilts booth with the Tanyard Creek quilts on other right side. They sold many Tanyard Creek kits with the Star & Log Cabin Block, and the wall hanging kit with the pineapple block. They even had a pillow with wool pineapple.

I’ve been a very bad blogger lately. Only two posts in a month! I think I might have a good reason though -I have been busy playing with this- It’s a new fabric line that I designed with my Mom. We named it Sanibel.

We set out to design a line of fabrics that were fresh and cheerful, with a cottage chic feel. The colors include shades of aqua blue, apple green, tangerine, salmon pink, butter yellow and a chocolate brown – all colors you might find on a beautiful beach-side resort. The prints would be perfect for a lake cottage, shabby chic decor, spring and summer quilts, a cheerful bedroom and we think they will work for any age group. We have included lots of floral prints – some smaller more traditional prints, and some larger trendy prints. There is a polka dot print included, along with a couple plaids for binding. We have been busy making quilts out of our sample yardage (which I previewed a bit of in my last post). We have four quilts done so far and can’t wait to share them with you!First, Fresh Blooms from the book “On the Run”. Perfect for a spring table!

Next up is Crazy Daisy, which Mom made for her grandaughter Isabella. This is the free pattern, available at www.henryglassfabrics.com – See the projects page and just look for the image below to download.

There is more to come, but this is all I can show at the moment. I’m working on a couple new patterns for this line and my Christmas line. (I hope to have them completed before market.)
Sanibel will be in stores the end of May/beginning of June from Henry Glass Fabrics. We hope you like it!

The countdown to market is in full swing. Only three weeks to have the new patterns finished, samples of the new fabric finished and a booth designed. So far I have three new patterns designed, photos finished, and lots of editing to do, so I’ve got a ways to go yet! In addition to all that, we have had a couple rooms in our house torn apart, but that is another post. I’ll just say it’s a good thing I’m so busy or all the dust and mess would be driving me crazy!
Another distraction arrived recently to help take my mind off the mess – my sample yardage of my Christmas fabric line – “At Home for the Holidays”.

I’m really excited about this line and I just have to say that I’m in love with the reds! I have been asking Henry Glass if I could do a Christmas line for a while now, so I was thrilled to get the go-ahead last year. I’ve already done a post about this line here, if you want to read more.

The main thing you need to know is that the line works great for Christmas, but most of the prints aren’t specifically Christmas. That means you can make quilts from this line that can be hanging around your house all year long. So, yes, I am going to get lots of miles out of this line! It matches my dining room, living room and kitchen, so I can’t wait to do a little redecorating. But first I have to get some quilts made! So far, there is one top finished -

This is the free pattern that can be downloaded at www.henryglassfabrics.com, so check it out! I made this one to be out at Christmas, but all you need to do is change the applique and use a different border, and it’s no longer so Christmassy.

Good morning, dear Friends! I can almost feel the advent of spring in my neck of the woods!!! We have had warmer days. It was 6:30pm the other night when we were out driving, and it wasn’t even dark… spring is almost here. The anticipation is building up, especially when I look at my Sweet Picket Fence quilt!

This quilt is also featured in the current issue of The Quilter magazine, along with Twilight Trails. The fabrics used are from Henry Glass‘ Simply Sweet Collection.

First, I was a guest on Quilt Out Loud in the summer. That was loads of fun to film. Can you imagine anything else sitting there with Mark Lipinski and Jodie Davis? It was such an awesome experience.

Next, I finished up a few projects for the wonderful folks at American Patchwork & Quilting. The first thing that I can finally share with you is my profile. It appears in the Feb 2010
issue that's on newsstands now. I also designed a quilt to compliment the article using my pretty Inspiration line.

Speaking of Inspiration, the response to the fabric line has been phenomenal. Thank You!

My latest book hit the store shelves in the past few weeks.
Jolly Stuff, is full of quick, easy and fun holiday items.

Cross Country Christmas Quilt Designer Blog Hop

Wonderful HG Designer Linda Lum Debono blogs for us....Sorry, I've haven't been around lately. I have had the nasty flu and I've been out of commission for a week now. Today, I have some awesome news to announce. I will be participating in the "Cross Country Christmas Quilt Designer Blog Hop" with 11 other wonderful designers (including HG designer Heather Mulder Peterson) across the US. All of the main festivities officially start Nov. 9 and end on Nov. 20.

Simply Sweet made it’s debut at Fall Quilt Market in Houston. I love this collection! We designed the sweetest floral stripes, a companion floral lattice, and a delicate little vine print.

We combined a funky oval print and our signature dots, stripes and checks to round out the collection. We were so inspired that we all ready have about 6 new quilts planned for this collection.

The first one we made is called Ladybug Hug and the pattern ships November 1st.

Simply Sweet ships in January 2010. I’m telling you that I can hardly wait!

On The Shelves Now!
Busy, busy, little bee. So much work, yet so little time. Who said that I'd have so much free time since Little A would be at school all day now? FYI, not true!

I can't believe that summer is nearly over and that fall is upon us. The kids are back at school and we are adjusting to the new schedule. I've been so busy these past few weeks with school, birthdays, activities and deadlines. How do we get some more time in the day?

The new season also means that Quilt Market is around the corner and that my fabric line, Inspiration, for Henry Glass Fabrics, should start hitting the quilt shop shelves any minute now. I'm excited about this line because the colors are upbeat and the message is good. Let me know what you think and of course, if you make something from the line, send a photo! I'd love to see!

Next month is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Many, if not all of us, have been touched by someone's story in her fight against breast cancer. I've designed a few projects for you to make as gifts for your loved ones in support of breast cancer awareness. There will be a lap quilt or two and a tote bag. Here's a sneak peak of the first design, Twinkle. I'm just tweaking the patterns right now. Drop by early next week for the patterns and to share your stories.

Super exciting news! You'll see Inspiration in a design for American Patchwork and Quilting this winter. The design will accompany my profile in their February 2010 issue! So awesome!

I think that my work of late has had a sense of "purpose" beyond making a beautiful quilt. I'm just about finished a knitting design for a prayer wrap. I'm giddy with excitement because it came out so beautifully. Be patient! You'll get to have a peak in time. xo, L

The Healing Power of Creating
How does an artist working on children’s hospital murals find her way to a wonderful fabric company designing for the quilt market? All I know is anything is possible in life, including dreams coming true. During the course of creating the Zany Animal murals, the hospital staff would stop by often and say how much they’d love to see these images on children’s fabrics. It occurred to me that I would too. Being an FIT grad who started her career in fashion, this idea
was never far from my thoughts. Combining two passions was a dream-designing textiles and creating images for sick children!

The newest collection of Zany Barnyard Animals was borne of a mural I painted at Saint Justine’s Children’s Hospital in Montreal in their Physiotherapy Clinic where children suffering from cancer and other traumatic illness were treated.It was all just waiting to unfold. Karen at Henry Glass was my muse as she encouraged me to write a simple story using the animal characters that would be printed on fabric and sold as a cut and sew baby book. In no time, it seemed, the book was written, pages designed, as if it was just waiting to appear!

My hope is that everything I create for HG people will touch the heart of the person using it, even tickle the sales people! That can’t hurt can it?!

I am thrilled to be a part of the talented group of HG designers. I look forward to bringing more to you in the coming months an wish you all a wonderful August.

HG Designer Michelle Engel Bencsko Blogs for US!

I'm so pleased to finally show off some sewing projects using my 2nd and latest fabric collection, Shade Garden for Henry Glass, which will be available this fall. Each of these pillows is made with 5 prints from the two available colorways: Bluebell and Coralbell. I'm so pleased with how well Bluebell fits in with my "real" shade garden and Coralbell punctuates all the pretty reds and pinks from my shade lovin' annuals.

These pillows were very spontaneous- I didn't measure a darn thing... which, in retrospect, would probably have made the project go a lot smoother and faster! I just cut strips and sewed. Then I backed it with some batting and another piece of cotton, "stitched in the ditch", as they say and sewed it to some solid linen for a back with a simple envelope closure. This is a great project for longish scrappy pieces and can just as easily be on horizontally.

I hear the quilt that Cate Tallman-Evans designed in the works and that just makes me plain old giddy- she's done a spectacular job with both of my collections now and I am always excited to see what people do with my work. I am also working with my quilter friend who made my last quilt using my Dogwood collection and she's going to quilt up my own roughly sketched Shade Garden quilt design for my Fall bedroom.

So, I've had a pretty exciting summer! I've been busy designing new print collections: My 3rd for Henry Glass - which I'm super excited about- and my 2nd for my own business, an organic cotton fabric company, Cloud9 Fabrics. I've also been penning a book which will include lots of lovely examples of my work for the various companies for whom I design - more details of which I'll formally share in the near future (I hope!). I've also signed a contract to do some stationery items (again, all very hush-hush at the moment!). And in case you're wondering how much more I could possibly do, I've managed to squeeze in a little family R&R, too!

More recently, I had the pleasure of being asked by Mark Lipinski to join him on his new QNNtv.com show, Quilt Out Loud! thanks to the gracious recommendation by Herny Glass' own Linda Lum DeBono. The segment was about being a textile designer. I was joined by Gail Kessler, designer and marketing director for Andover Fabrics and we fielded questions about how we work and the influence of trends, markets and business. Gail being very entrenched in the market and community, and me, sort of a fledgling newbie! It was a fabulous experience and I did learn a lot myself, not having come from a quilting background. I think it must appear funny to some that I can design, but not quilt... but I'M LEARNING! Slowly but surely, I WILL get my quilting wings one day!

Tune in to the show! Should be released this October, and I believe it's a two part segment. It promises to be a great one.

So, summer's coming to a close, the book needs attention and I'm also preparing for the Houston Quilt Market, so I better scoot. This, I type, as I watch my husband and boys drive away down to the beach for the day! Will have to squeeze in at least one more leisure activity before time is up.

HG Designer Kim Diehl Blogs for US!

Where is the summer going? It seems like only yesterday I was brushing the snow off of my newly sprouting garden, and all of a sudden, my flowers are bursting with color and its ninety degrees!

Even with all of my dead-heading and weeding, a new book in the works, and preparing artwork for a new fabric line for Henry Glass called “Along the Fence”, I’ve managed to find a little time to play. July is the month that I traditionally reserve for vacation with my family, and we spent several beautiful days on the Oregon coast earlier this month. Enjoying the sunsets, smelling the sea air, and trying not to be tackled by your children while wiggling your toes in the surf is extremely therapeutic, and I highly recommend a trip to this beautiful part of the country if you’re ever able. As you can see by the picture, I was only semi-successful in the “not being tackled” plan.
After returning home, I was invited to be the guest of honor at a quilting social hosted by a local quilt guild here in Idaho called “Behind the Scenes”. What better way to spend a summer morning than sharing the company of fellow quilters and looking at vintage quilts hanging in the sunshine? The nicest surprise, though, was seeing a hand-quilted version of my Country Haven quilt hanging alongside the antique quilts that were on display.

Members of this guild worked together to piece, appliqué, and hand-quilt this project made entirely from my Country Haven line of fabrics, and for every hour of time spent on its construction, each member received a ticket for a chance to win it in a drawing. I was given the honor of scooping up the winning ticket, and one lucky member went home very happy!

A second and equally nice surprise was seeing the “thank you” quilt made up in my Country Haven collection that was stitched by guild members and gifted to the hostess of the social – there is simply not a nicer, more generous group of people than quilters, and I feel so fortunate to spend so much of my time in their company.

Here’s hoping that even in the midst of this busy time of year, you find a few moments to make a quilt of your own and spend a little time in the company of good friends.

I have not fallen off the planet for those who are wondering...

Remember when I was telling you about our new quilt book? I was going to keep you updated as we went through the process. The book is called Cradle to Cradle and this is what the cover looks like. The book features quilts designed to commemorate the moments in a girl's life from her baby quilt through her wedding quilt and ends with a baby quilt for her first born child.

When I left off last time, the quilts were getting their beauty shots taken by the photographer. Well today the whole thing has gone to the printer! I don't know how that happened. We will give you all the details in our July newsletter.

The good folks at Henry Glass have agreed to reprint Bubblegum Basics one more time so we will all have enough fabric to make the quilts in the book! What a company! Two of the quilts in the book are made from Bubblegum Basics.

We also have a new mystery block of the month quilt made from Bubblegum Basics in the works. We will be offering it on our website and I think it is pretty cute if I do say so myself! The reason I say that is because I am doing exactly what I want and will keep this quilt for one of my grandaughters. It has been really fun to work on. Hg Designer Kim Diehl Blogs for US!

I recently returned home from a WAY fun teaching trip to a quilt shop in Victor, New York, called “Ivy Thimble Quilt and Gift Shop” (www.ivythimble.com), where I was given the opportunity to share my quilts and my new Molly’s Meadow collection of fabrics for Henry Glass. We also offered workshops for several projects featuring my invisible machine appliqué method (and here’s where I have to admit to all of you that I’m always thrilled to be able to turn people on to the joys of appliqué). What a blast!

With every workshop, I see students arrive for class with enough sewing paraphernalia to require at least three trips to the car to haul it all inside – looking at all the rolling travel cases and mounds of “stuff” you’d think that they were moving in, but we all know if they left one single thing at home, that would be the one thing they needed and didn’t have!

One of our workshops focused on the quilt design from the Molly’s Meadow line of fabrics, and I can’t tell you how rewarding it was for me to see people embrace the scrappy look of this collection, especially when they saw how the prints work together to completely take the guesswork out of choosing fabrics for scrap quilts.

Am I a lucky girl to be able to spend my days with other quilters who share this passion for cutting up perfectly good fabric and then sewing it all back together? Sometimes I almost have to pinch myself! Next stop is California…who wants to stay home when you can be out sharing the joy of making quilts?

Here in Atlanta, we have Chastain Park, offering outdoor concerts all summer long and believe me, there is a bit of a competition with regards to food and presentation!
I chose to use a natural colored canvas as the accent for the top and bottom of t his large tote. And yes, I did indeed spray it with several coats of fabric guard! You'll notice I used ribbons as accents rather than fabric as the pattern shows. I also doubled the width of the handles so they would be very comfortable and sturdy.

I used a McCalls Pattern, number M5897 from Designer Karina Hittle, her line is called Artful Offerings. My coordinating paper line is available through QVC.com and is called the Iris Collection by Brenda Pinnick.

APRIL BLOG ENTRY:

Spring has arrived, with the annual national quilt shows beginning next weekend in Chicago. These shows are what all fabric lovers wait for each year. I will be at the AQS show in Paducah the week of April 20th. I look forward to seeing people from all over the world enjoying fabrics, notions, and, most of all, QUILTS. If you see me there, be sure to say Hello. My "Posies Galore" 1930s reproduction line is ready for Quilt Market in May. What a great way to begin the summer, when our leisure time can also include designing and sewing quilts. I love stitching on binding while seated on my deck!

My accompanying picture (see above) this month is the first of two 41 1/2" x 49"quilts I recently made. The design is based on a star quilt top I have from c.1940 and a quilt from 1937 in the book "101 Fabulous Rotary Cut Quilts" by Judy Hopkins and Nancy J. Martin. I wanted two quilts I could use in my Color seminars and lectures that contained examples of my first two 1930s repro lines. Quilters are often surprised that the same quilt pattern looks very different when color choices vary in each quilt. Also, when not using them for marketing purposes, they will look marvelous on the two hangers in our family room when I am displaying 1900-1950 quilts from my collection around the room. Hello All, I am dragging quilts and fabric and lunch to Wyoming tomorrow to teach class. I will take a few pictures of the quilts to post on the blog when I get home. I always take Curried Chicken Salad with me. (See below for my special recipe). It makes a good ladies luncheon or Quilt Group supper. I usually do fresh baked rolls, pineapple and banana chunks for appetizer and brownies for dessert.

Cucina's Curried Chicken Salad

Salad
2 lbs chicken breast, cooked and cut into 1 " pieces
4 ribs celery, thinly sliced on the diagonal
2 c red grapes, cut in halves
1/2 c chopped walnuts
1/2 c golden raisins

Dressing
1 cup mayonnaise
1/4 c half and half
1/2 cup apricot preserves
1/4 c rice wine vinegar
2 Tbsp curry powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp white pepper

In large bowl combine chicken, celery, grapes, nuts and raisins. For dressing, combine all dressing ingredients in a small bowl and stir until well blended. Gently fold dressing into chicken mixture. Chill at least 1 hour before serving. Serves 8.

Wonderful HG Designer Bev Proulx Blogs Especially for US!

Today we have 62 minutes more daylight than on Feb. 1, and the sun is higher, making lovely tree shadows on the snow in my front yard. Spring will come, for this morning was even above zero! Such wonderful quilting time for us in the Upper Midwest!! My next line, named "Posies Galore" thus far, is set to go to Market for all to see in May. I included three novelties in the line that will sparkle with all my fabrics. I am currently working on a quilt done as a 1930's quilt would have been. I have a top with this pattern, so I thought I would use my 1930s reproduction fabrics to grab a bit of the era. I should have a picture of it to share, and perhaps a pattern, later in spring.

I created a new seminar this winter called "Magnificent Color Play (or Building Color Confidence)". I have taught it three times thus far, with three more by mid-April. It has been so enjoyable helping class members develop a confidence regarding color use in their quilts. With such a long winter this year, the quilters need all the color they can get. Just before Christmas, I received a package from Karen, my design director at Henry Glass and CO. Inside that package was 5 yard cuts of the new line that Mom and I had painted up several months earlier. It’s called Rebel Roses and should be in stores next month.

Here's a sneak peak at my stash - I know this looks like a huge stack, but I really wanted you to see the colors.

I also want you to see my partner-in-crime, so to speak, so here’s a shot of my Mom and I with our new goods -
By the way, you don’t even have to read the sentence above to know where I came from. My Mom met up with a friend last week that was visiting from out of state (and they don’t get to see each other that much) and she told Mom that I look more like her than she does! We got a chuckle out of that, as she was good friends with Mom about 20 years ago - the same age that I am now!

I may have mentioned Mom and I working together, just a few times in the past. This fabric line was another of our collaborations. We were inspired by these rich, yet fresh and cheerful colors, along with our favorite mix of prints - An extra large floral, plaids, stripes, and assorted other prints and smaller florals. It’s fun to work on together on the prints, and even more fun when the fabric starts arriving. Since then we have been busy cutting and sewing up some new quilts. We’d like to show you how the fabric works up and maybe try to inspire you with ways to use these fabrics.

I chose to make a new quilt for my kitchen (see above). It’s called From the Heart and it’s in the book Livin’ Large. I’ve already made two of these quilts, so I had to change the words a bit. (I have a hard time following my own directions). The original says Faith ~ Hope ~ Love.

I would also love to make this quilt with Bistro- the new line by Deb Strain and replace the flowers with coffee cups and the words with Mocha - Espresso - Latte. For some reason, I haven’t found the time to make a 4th one!

I take back what I said earlier - maybe this is my favorite. Can you even stand it???

Okay. I am trying something new that I don't know much about. That Anne Sutton over at Bunny Hill made a movie about her new fabric which raised the bar for the rest of the HG designers! I am not as techno-savvy as Anne but have lots of grandkids! There's more than one way to make a quilt block you know!

I asked my granddaughter to make me a little movie of the swatches in our Bubblegum Basics line. She has done that and now I am uploading it to this blog. Didn't work. Of course it wouldn't be quite that easy. Grumble, grumble. Will try again.I have taken a new approach. Just because I can't figure out how to post the movie doesn't mean I can't make a new one of my own... (Tick tock, there goes another hour or four). Oh yeah, and just because I am such an expert, I think I will add music too!Well that didn't exactly work too well. I am nothing if not perseverant!!! (after all it's only time and I am so far behind now that what difference does a few more hours make? WooHoo!!

Success at last! I am a multi-media genius! As you watch the video and listen to the music, you can read the blocks from my cute panel that will give you an idea of what I did or thought or said as I experienced this new adventure. Hope you have fun.Why should I be the only one having all this fun? Why not give you the link so you too can make your own movie? Just keep an eye on the clock! Bev Proulx- HG designer....blogs for us!

I am ready for tropical prints and Hawaiian muu-muus! We had four days with below zero temperatures last week, and I am ready to change my quilting plans, that is for sure! Something in winter sets our design plans toward a cheeryspring. I taught two four-hour color confidence seminars last week during the cold. The quilters were so happy to discover that the warmth of red added so much pizzazz to their color choices. The sun reflected off the snow through large windows at the shop, and the lights changed everyone's perceptions regarding color. One of the most interesting of their discoveries is that they can indeed use 1930s reproductions and create a light-medium-dark palette for a quilt of many fabrics. What a pleasure it was for me to watch their color growth as each hour passed!

I do find myself wishing I was heading off to warmer climes forjust a few days. I know, however, many other quilters are housebound in these times and looking for new and exciting quilting and fabric ideas. As we spend a little money at several shops, let us select fabrics that excite our possibilities as we plan our future quilting efforts! Let us support our shops that provide us with the wonderful creativity we all need! I am eager to finalize my next line for Henry Glass & Co. We should have it in the pipeline soon. I will keep you posted as things progress. I know you will love the new novelty and floral prints! Meanwhile, keep quilting and using my Henry Glass fabrics. Happy New Year! Bev Proulx

It’s snowing and blowing…and blowing and snowing. Lately, this is ALL it seems to do here in Idaho as I’ve been longing for spring and missing my beautiful flower gardens.
Of course, I’ve mostly been experiencing the snowing and blowing from the comfort of my nice warm house, because while I would have normally been knee-deep in all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, unexpected vertigo issues have kept me close to home. It seems that when you’re temporarily a dizzy broad, operating a moving vehicle is somewhat frowned upon. In my opinion, this is being overly nit-picky, but there you have it.

Anyway, the really great thing about being under “house arrest” is that it leaves you with all sorts of time on your hands for designing, quilting, and cooking; basically, all my favorite things done to my heart’s content in a totally guilt-free environment. I love being dizzy!

In the area of design, I’ve been wrapping up my Simple Comforts book for its May release, and I’ve also been putting the finishing touches on my new Molly’s Meadow fabric collection for HG, which is scheduled to arrive in quilt shops this April. Inspired by (you guessed it!) my favorite theme of nature and flowers, this line is named for my youngest daughter. These prints have lots of rich color and texture, and I’ve used the scrap basket approach that I love so much in designing them.

Best of all, when they’re used as a collection, these prints completely take the guesswork out of choosing fabrics for your own scrap quilts! Honestly, I feel a little bit like a kid at Christmas while I’m waiting for these to arrive, because I think the quilt for this line is just so dang cute.

Oh, and remember all of the sewing time I mentioned? I returned to my roots and treated myself to some hand-sewing time over the holidays because hey, I sure wasn’t going anywhere, and I whipped out this new quilt project – all the while sipping coconut mochas and wearing my favorite warm woolies. How sinfully decadent is that? Pieced and hand appliquéd from both cotton and wool, it will be available through my workshops when I begin this year’s travel schedule. And I may be visiting your local quilt guild or even your favorite quilt shop soon – if you check my schedule at http://www.kimdiehl.com/, you might find that we’ll be crossing paths in the very near future!

Last, but DEFINITELY not least, cooking! I made the yummiest soup the other day while the snow was flying… yet again. The aromas wafting from the kitchen while I worked in my sewing room made the whole house smell delicious. And, I was able to sew while I “cooked” – bonus! This recipe was so easy and tasty that I thought some of you might enjoy giving it a whirl, so here it is:

KIM’S CROCKPOT CHOWDER

6 slices of peppered bacon, cut into 1/2” pieces
1 medium onion, diced
4 cans (6.5-ounces) of minced clams, including juice
5 medium potatoes, peeled and cut into a large dice
1 stalk of celery, thinly sliced
1 can (15-ounces) of whole kernel corn, drained
3 cups of chicken broth
3 teaspoons of salt
1/4 teaspoon of pepper
3 cups of fat-free half and half
4 rounded tablespoons of cornstarch
1/2 teaspoon of dried parsley

Sauté bacon and onion in a skillet until golden brown; drain fat. Add to a large Crockpot with all remaining ingredients except half and half, cornstarch, and parsley; stir together. Cover and cook on the high setting until potatoes are tender, about three hours. Whisk together cornstarch and half and half; pour into Crockpot mixture, stirring gently to mix well. Add parsley. Cover and continue cooking on high heat, stirring occasionally, until warmed through and thickened, about 30 to 45 minutes. Serve with toasted English muffins or a loaf of crusty bread. Enjoy!

So, how excited am I?! Dogwood is finally released and in my mind, the only other thing on earth I have been this anxious for was the birth of my sons. So, I exaggerate a little... the point is, I'm impatient and thought the day would never come. Then it got delayed, and I got more anxious and now it's here and I'm happy. See Larry? :)

I have been designing print patterns for nearly 15 years now, most of which for the not-so-glamorous mens and boys boxer industry. It was a living... a good one, but not very self-fulfilling, if you can imagine. This past September I finally quit my day job to work for myself and make patterns I actually like- and would use! My company name is Cicada Studio. It's a small, independent company and under this tent I do exclusive designs on linen/cotton blends as well as paper products and gift items and I even toss in some graphic design on the side. While, it's lovely to do my own work for my own company, I can't really express how exciting it was to design a collection for the world-wide quilt market and cater to a slightly different customer, thus branching my budding business goals and filling my mind with all sorts of creative ideas.

Is it OK that I admit I'm not a quilter? I do sew- more for home decorating and smaller crafty projects. And I do appreciate quilts and quilting a lot. I am literally amazed at the skills of people like you, who can take pieces of fabric, sew them together, make stunning and intricate designs that flow, move, communicate and inspire. Pieces that are loved and cuddled or hung and probably handed down from one generation to the next... It was important to me to balance what was necessary for you as well as what would feel right to me. And guess what? I have actually designed a quilt! And you can make it, just like the talented lady who is making mine for me, LOL.

When I began the process of designing Dogwood, I really took heed to what Karen, Design Director at HG, was trying to teach me about the balance, scale and content of the work and how it will play into the quilter's design. Merchandising is really an important factor in creating almost any line, and because I've done that for other markets I suddenly realized how much I can draw on that experience for this project. Armed with a new perspective and confidence, I set out to make quilt-worthy patterns that would mesh with my vision, home and aesthetic. I've already made some small projects here and there with my initial samples of Dogwood: like these cute little tote bags, a retro-inspired apron (tute available on my blog) and this adorable little stuffed elephant who still needs his butt sewn up, poor thing (tute coming soon). I have more plans.. more plans than time, it seems. Already, we're working on my next HG collection and hopefully I won't pass out from anxiety while we wait!

I hope you'll be as inspired to work with Dogwood, as I was in creating it! I've got a snazzy little Flickr group going for those of you who would like to share projects with me. Please do hurry, because I'm feeling lonely in there all by myself. The fabric just hit the stores, so you can rush right out and buy some. No pressure or anything...

Heather Mulder Peterson previews her new line Rebel Roses and her inspiration for it!

This line was inspired by my (our) love of roses, painted in an impressionist-type style. They represent the traditional side of this line. We also introduced some trendy prints - with the funky flowers, stripes and plaids. I think it turned out as the perfect combination of my two favorite styles.

There is a nice mix of scales, with the large roses being the large-scale stand-out print, but also includes some smaller scaled prints that are perfect for piecing quilts.

The colors are very fresh and combine some of my favorite colors to decorate with. I think the quilters will really enjoy this aspect of the line because many of the fun, large-scale lines out right now are pretty wild and can be a challenge to decorate with. With this line, you get the best of both worlds! I hope you enjoy using them as much as we enjoyed making them.

Debbie Taylor-Kerman previews her new Christmas Line

Hi there, As everyone is now getting well into the Holiday Groove, I’m about to embark on packing up our home – we’re moving on December 21st (yes I know it’s crazy.) But I wanted my kids to be in our new home for Christmas – we’ve been renovating our place for two years!!!

Fortunately I’m a bit of a maniac when it comes to unpacking and I’m already spilling over with ideas on how to bring the magic of Christmas to our new home – especially what to do with the fabric from my “Tis the Season” collection and from my new, soon to be released collection, “Winter Wonderland”. I’m so excited about this new collection - there’s dancing penguins, frolicking polar bears, city skaters and Santa and his elves delivering gifts in assorted trucks and cars, as well as some fabulous bold co-ordinating stripes and dots.

I know there’s going to be limits on my time, but I’d be so thrilled if I managed to have Santa and his helpers delivering presents draped on the windows as makeshift curtains as Jules first opens his eyes on Christmas morning and cover Eli’s bed with the city skaters, as he dreams of skating in Central Park this coming winter. Who knows, I may only manage to wrap the gifts and decorate the tree, and that will be okay too, because I’m so fortunate that my home is filled with so much love, excitement, joy and Christmas spirit, and that’s all that really matters. And you know what - there’s always next year……….

It’s very exciting to be here as a guest today on the Henry Glass blog, thanks for inviting me.
Today I wanted to tell you a bit about my personal journey and how it has led me to where I am today, it’s a long story so maybe you should make yourself a cuppa tea, grab a cookie, sit back and enjoy the journey with me.
Let’s begin....
I finished school at 16 as I really did not enjoy school very much, although of course I loved art and craft. My parents who were not happy that I was leaving school found me a job with a good friend in a craft shop where many things were made on the premises, hand thrown and painted pottery, hand-printed clothing and in the loft space there was a Dutch lady by the name of Ans Fredericks who wove cloth on a huge old Huguenot loom, it was Ans I went to work with. Here I am threading the loom with the warp threads ready for weaving. (yes, I do look young and yes, my hair has changed color!)

During the few years that I worked in the store I learnt alot not only about spinning and weaving but also about customer relations and how to run a successful business, things that have stood me in good stead throughout the years.
By the end of the 70's I was enjoying a variety of crafts, including bobbin lacemaking, spinning and weaving, Fair Isle knitting and of course macrame! The birth of my first son in 1981 heralded the end of my fancy knitting and lacemaking as baby David could undo hours of work in a moment! I needed a craft that was portable, produced something to treasure and use, patchwork was the answer. I took an evening class and produced a traditional sampler quilt and this lovely spiders web quilt which apart from the white with tiny roses background was made entirely from my dressmaking friends scrap box. Whenever I show this quilt it makes everyone smile as most people know I dont work with pink fabric but back then I was just grateful for the fabric!

Baby Michael arrived in 1983 and we moved to the Channel Islands, from the mainland in 1984. I held classes for patchwork and quilting from our home weekly for almost 40 ladies. Never one to sit still for too long, Mum and I opened what was to be a very busy gift and clothing store in the bustling high street of St Peter Port, Guernsey. Heres the shop window the day after the birth of my third son, Edward (Eddie) who many ladies got to meet at the recent quilt market in Houston.

In 1990 we moved to Australia, my father had lived here in his early teens and had always wanted to return. In 1995 I produced my very first patterns, they were marketed under the label Lynette Anderson for The Patchwork Angel, the name angel was chosen as my Dad always called my brother and I his angels (which we were not). The patterns were an immediate success, some of the early patterns are as popular today as they were back then. Heres couple of my all time favourites, On The Farm and Waiting For Santa.

In 1997 with the help of my Mum, Ruth we opened a quilt store, The Patchwork Angel in an old church, on Queenslands Sunshine Coast. Many people would be forgiven for thinking that the trading name was chosen because of the old church that now housed the quilt store but in fact that name had been chosen two years prior when I released my first patterns.

After almost ten wonderful, busy years both in my design business and in the retail business I decided it was time to focus full time on my designing and The Patchwork Angel was sold to one of my long time employees.

These days I work from my home studio (aka spare bedroom), I love working from home although I have to admit the first 6 months after I sold the shop was a disaster as I was very undisciplined with my time, these days I am more focussed and am enjoying setting myself some new goals and achieving some new dreams, one of which was to design fabrics.

This year I have had the extra excitement of working with Henry Glass & Co producing two fabric lines. Anne Sutton from Bunny Hill who designs fabric for henry Glass was responsible for introducing me to the wonderful Larry, thanks Anne. It has been a wonderful experience, from posting off my little paintings to seeing how their design team interpreted them to seeing the fabrics on paper and now I am trying to be patient waiting to see the fabric!
Where does my inspiration come from? Everywhere, there is something inspiring at every turn of my head, alot of my ideas are stored memories from my childhood. I grew up in the English countryside, my summers were filled with playing hide and seek with my brother in the hedgerows around our home, bringing Mum bouquets of wild flowers and learning the names of the wildflowers, insects and animals that shared lives.

This sneek peek is from my line called Christmas Magic which is for Christmas 2009, I am so excited about working with my very own fabrics, my sketch pad is full of ideas for quilts, aprons, stockings and more! Be sure to check your local quilt shops for Henry Glass fabrics and maybe your local store will have my fabrics on their shelves next year.

My latest block of the month quilt, 'A Kittens Tale' is inspired by two of our very lovable if a little mischievous house mates, Hugo and Felix who are an inseparable duo who's daily antics keep us and my regular blog readers in stitches!

I have recently launched two new, very cute buttons to my handpainted button range.

Can you see a Hugo and Felix fabric line emerging soon? I think I can!

Barbara Jones Update- Bubblegum Basics Are In!

Barbara Jones writes for HG BLOG... "The strike offs of Bubblegum Basics have all arrived! Most of you know that strike-offs are little test samples for each fabric in a collection that the textile mill prepares. The textile mill sends strike-offs to the design director (in my case it is Karen see her in our market photos) at the fabric company (Henry Glass & Co). This person looks the fabric over carefully to be certain there are no problems with the printing and they send a set of strike-offs back to the designer (me) for review. It is always an exciting time because this is the first time I see the designs on actual fabric! There can be some surprises and sometimes there are minor changes that need to be made before the mill makes oodles of yards of a particular design".

"Bubblegum Basics has a really cute hanky panel included in the line. They aren't really hankies but that panel reminds me of them. We have 7 1/2" pre-printed squares with sayings for today's teen girls (and their moms and grandmas) like "Oh my Gosh", "Laugh out Loud", etc. (read these with a valley girl accent...like totally, you know!) Our Mall Doll quilt pattern (free with purchase of the fabric) uses these squares in a quick and easy quilt pattern designed for "hip chicks!"More on the fabric on the next post..." "It was a whirlwind weekend and it was awesome. I was in Houston at Quilt Market. I worked more than I played this time. I really got my creative groove back at this show. I could really feel it this time. I didn't get a lot of photos of all that was going on but I did stop by a few booths. It was nice chatting around the Henry Glass booths. I got to meet the other designers who work with them. Lynette Andersen [right] is from Australia! She had her son working really hard! Karen [middle] keeps me in line! I also saw Bunny Hill Designs and met Quilt Soup, and Michelle Engel Bencsko of the beautiful Cicada Studios".

We are delighted to announce that we have designed a new fabric collection called Bubblegum Basics for Henry Glass & Co. It was tremendous fun to do this collection. We are debuting the collection at Fall Market in Houston and will show you the whole thing when we return. School buses pass my house again. The nights are crisp and clear. Autumn is coming!I spent my summer doing much travel involving my grandchildren and other family members. While traveling, I could check quilt shops to see the great Henry Glass Co. fabrics out there. Many great fabrics from our fine designers. Also, I certainly hunted for vintage fabrics, whether yardage, quilt blocks and tops, or quilts themselves. I found many examples! My 1930s collection can never be too large!!

Be sure to check my lines coming in 2009 for some delightful new novelty prints and geometrics. These fabrics spiced up the 1930s general store shelves of our grandmothers' day.I have also been working on original quilt patterns. My "Posies Galore" pattern traveled with me to Iowa for an "Eye for Color" lecture in July. Local quilt stores are providing good feedback on the pattern, as well.

I am including a picture of the pattern cover for all of you to see. I am currently working on another original 1930s pattern, which I hope to have ready to go before my next blog entry. This week I am off to southwestern Minnesota to do a Quilts through Time lecture that covers 1750-1900. It is always a joy to use fabrics, blocks, tops, and quilts from my collection to share information about how unique and impressive quilts were even then.

Today, we are fortunate so many fabric designers keep marvelous fabrics coming so we can maintain the quilting tradition! Have a spectacular September! Greetings!
It’s beginning to feel the tiniest bit like fall here in Idaho (my favorite season of the year!), and I’m happily back at home catching my breath and fuelling up on coconut mochas after teaching workshops for the Buggy Barn’s annual quilt show in Reardon, Washington. I love those girls! Both Pam and Janet have talent oozing from their fingertips, a quilt shop to die for, and they still manage to be two of the nicest and most down-to-earth people I’ve ever met.
During my visit, one of the classes I taught featured my Country Haven quilt designed using my debut line of fabrics for Henry Glass…somebody pinch me! I can’t even describe what it felt like to see block after block taking shape, with each one just a little different than the last. And for the first time EVER in one of my workshops, everyone got so caught up sewing their patchwork that we nearly forgot (gasp!) to squeeze in the appliqué.

One of the things I absolutely love about quilting is that I always seem to have little snippets and bits of leftover fabric from each of my projects. Do I throw these away? Nope! I always stash them safely in my scrap basket and rescue them for future projects. And because I’m a quiltmaker, not being able to part with 1” scraps of fabric still means that I’m considered to be delightfully normal…right?
Anyway, after finishing my Country Haven quilt I found that I had scads of perfectly good scraps on hand. Being the thrifty and frugal soul that I am, I turned these into a fun little patchwork center, added an appliquéd border, and presto! The result is a quick and easy candle mat that I call “Country Bramble”. This little 18 1/2” square quilt is a perfect way to give new life to your scraps, so I’m passing it along here for you to enjoy, too.

Oh where have I been?
Hello everyone! Remember me? I am finally back in New Jersey. We have been driving around to all destinations this summer and we got back late last night. My sister and her family are visiting from Toronto the rest of this week so it will be great to end the summer this fun way. To all of you who have commented or e-mailed, I will get back to you soon! I gotta unwind and do a pile of laundry. Before I forget, run over to Bunny Hill Designs. Anne is having a scavenger hunt [so fun!]. The winner gets some of her lovely fabric.
Oh where have I been? Let's start with this last trip. I just came back from a fun trip to do a book signing at Checker Distributor in Maumee, Ohio for their 60th Anniversary Open House. Checker Distributors sells wholesale to those who have businesses in the quilting/needlework industry. What a fab group of people! Everyone from the organization to the shop owners and other designers who came were fantastic. Here's an end cap of designs and fabric from Kim Diehl and my fave group of people, Henry Glass.
